The Novatones Set to Release New Material

Southampton’s very own indie four piece The Novatones are set to release their eagerly anticipated new EP ‘Sunday Romance’ on the 20th September.

Fresh from their well-received performance at this year’s Isle of White Festival, the boys entered the studio to get their latest offering ready for the waiting public.

Previous releases ‘For Monies Sake’ and ‘Begging at the Bunhouse’ have seen, Anthony Pittman (Guitar and Lead Vocals), Sean Swift (Drums and Percussion) Mackenzie Gordon-Smith (Guitar and Backing Vocals) and Toby Hornby-Patterson (Bass and Backing Vocals), develop a growing fan base that is starting to spread far beyond their south coast home.

The video for the wonderfully catchy ‘Living for the Weekend’ has gained some impressive numbers on YouTube and shows the band at their playful best. Jangling indie pop guitars and a chorus that hooks you right into the weekend, make this tune a growing indie staple.

The more melodic ‘Avenue Road’ shows a more sensitive side to the band with its heartfelt lyrics and gentler sound.

The Novatones impressive back catalogue shows a band that are continually growing musically and the new EP will see the further development of a band at the top of its game.

August will see the release of some tasters from the new EP but at the moment you can check out what the band have been up to so far here.

The national singing competition TeenStar has found its latest winner! Joining a long line of prestigious Future Music competition winners, Emily Middlemas from Glasgow, Scotland has been crowned as TeenStar 2014 champion at The NEC in Birmingham.

TeenStar 2014 champion

Emily Middlemas was crowned champion in front of a capacity crowd and a prestigious music industry judging panel at The NEC in Birmingham on Saturday night. Singing her own original song ‘Goodnight Kiss’, Emily won over the competition industry judges, making her the winner of the Mid-Teen age category and the overall winner of the TeenStar singing competition. She has now won a recording and development deal including £5,000 to spend on the development of her music.

The national singing competition is brought to you by Future Music – the company behind the discovery of artists such as Jacob Banks, Warner Music’s Birdy, Columbia Record’s Lucy Spraggan, Union J’s Jaymi Hensley and Jahmene Douglas, both of whom are now signed to Sony Music, and last year’s TeenStar competition winner Luke Friend, who was runner up on The X Factor last year.

Music industry judges

After impressing the judging panel at the auditions Emily Middlemas battled against more than 9,000 acts who signed up to TeenStar this year across the UK. She went on to perform in the TeenStar live showcases, battling through both Regional and Area Final heats to make it to the national Grand Final.

The judging panel for the Grand Final included record label representatives from Sony and Universal, as well as names such as four time Ivor Novello award winner Mark Hill, Birdy’s producer Gareth Henderson, Sony Music talent scout James Dillamore, A&R scout for Universal Music James Meadows, Jayne Collins – an A&R consultant for major record companies who has put together and managed The Saturdays and The Wanted, CeCe Sammy – a TV personality and celebrity vocal coach who has worked with the likes of Diana Ross, Will Young, Simon Cowell and Leona Lewis, journalist for TeenStar partner Shout Magazine Claire McDonald, along with Head of Future Music Chris Grayston. Also picked by the judging panel as winners were Jake Mckechnie from Wigan, Manchester, who won the Pre-Teen age category, and Victoria Bass from Folkestone, Kent who took home the title for the Late-Teen age category.

Emily has now won a comprehensive consultation package with Future Music, an extensive winner’s publicity package, and an amazing £5,000 to spend on the development of her music. On winning the prizes Emily said,”Thank you to the TeenStar team for being so supportive throughout my musical journey, as well as my mum and dad, and the industry judges”.

Merchandise – Little Killer (Official Video)

Merchandise have just announced from their website that their new album, After The End, will be released on 4AD on August 25th.

Like their albums before them, After The End was recorded and produced by the band, this time over a six-month period in the house they share in Tampa. A real achievement in showing what bands can achieve themselves, the only outside influence came when they enlisted mixing help from Gareth Jones – the man famed for his work with Tuxedomoon, Depeche Mode’s Berlin Trilogy of Construction Time Again, Some Great Reward, and Black Celebration, and more recently Interpol, These New Puritans and Grizzly Bear.

Speaking to the NME earlier this year, Carson Cox said “(Our last album) Totale Nite was the end of the book. This is a whole new one. It’s like we can start a new band with basically the same name. We’ve already exploded our reality – now we’re going to re-make ourselves as a pop band, but it’ll still be a twisted reality.” He’s kept to his word with the album being made up of ten tracks spread across a mean 45 minutes. The album can now be pre-ordered from iTunes / 4AD

The/Das – My Made Up Spook (official music video)

Berlin based duo The/Das release single My Made Up Spook on 23rd June 2014. The single is taken from their captivating debut album Freezer, released on August 18th 2014 via Sinnbus.

The video was filmed spontaneously in Mumbai by Fabian Fenk’s girlfriend – a vivid, dreamlike memory of their time together. There was no real plan, the pair wandered the streets filming the crazy haziness of the city.

My Made Up Spook quietly unravels from electronic beginnings, revealing the duo’s new direction as a band. The track straddles the line between intelligent pop and what they describe as ‘techno tenderness’. Imagine the razor-sharp polished sound Sohn created with his recent album Tremors but with a more organic, wistful edge.

The single is a departure from last year’s Speak Your Mind Speak EP, which gained praise from The 405, Clash, Artrocker, VICE’s Noisey and many more. With their latest album Freezer, The/Das prove they are one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the Berlin scene.

They first sprung to life in 2012 with their Fresh Water EP, released on Italy’s cutting edge dance label Life And Death. Collaborating with Life And Death’s Tale Of Us – one of the world’s hottest techno acts – they released two remixes for Me And My Drummer that caught the attention of the press and their peers all over Europe.

Duo Fabian Fenk and Anton K. Feist previously played together with Bodi Bill. As Bodi Bill, the band released four albums together and built a considerable fan base in their native Germany. In the UK, XFM, NME Radio and BBC 6Music picked them up with reviews and features coming from RCRDLBL, Notion, Shortlist Magazine and numerous websites and blogs. As The/Das, however, they’ve been creating noise online with The 405, Artrocker, Clash, Noisey and Notion praising their last EP Speak Your Mind Speak. They are no strangers to the live circuit either having played Melt, Eurosonic, Iceland Airwaves, Ekko Festival, to name but a few.

My Made Up Spook is only just a taster of what’s to come, out via Sinnbus on 23rd June 2014.
