Metaquorum impress with debut single ‘North Sea Fret’

Fresh from the release of their debut album, MetaQuorum have unleashed the track above – the excellent ‘North Sea Fret’. If you’re a fan of mainstream radio music, perhaps you should look away now.

However, if you like what you’re hearing, then you will also enjoy the additional nine tracks you can find on debut album ‘Midnight Sun‘.

Jess Thristan – ‘Live on Love’ EP (and video) out now

Light, entertaining and instantly catchy, this video is ‘Live on Love’ by Jess Thristan – the title track to a new EP which sees the singer-songwriter on typically fine form. With so many acoustic songwriters to choose from in the UK at the moment, it takes a lot of effort to keep standing head and shoulders above the rest, but there’s just something about Thristan that means she manages to do that.

Maybe it’s because her voice just flows out of her, making all that effort seem easy, thanks to a talent that is so obviously inherent. Thristan was clearly born to sing, and it helps that she writes songs which suit her perfectly. The track above sees her on cheeky, melodic form, but the other two tracks on the EP explore the more powerful side of a versatile vocal.

The EP, her second, is out now, and yet another step forward for an acoustic songwriter who stands out from a crowded stage. Long may it continue.

Who knew Essex indie could sound this good?

Apologies for the perjorative headline – Essex has never been a particularly good or place band for an indie band to come from. However, in recent years, the growth of programmes like The Only Way is Essex have give the county a bad name.

Thankfully, now comes a perfect antidote to the airheaded idiots of that particular show. The Lowriders are an indie band on the rise, proud of their hometown of Clacton-on-Sea and also, rightfully, proud of their self-titled debut album.

The track above is taken from the album, and demonstrates brilliantly the solid, chunky sound of the band. But there are quieter moments too, ones which waver and shift in front of your eyes (and ears), but in a good way. It’s hard to know from one track to the next on this album what to expect. But one thing’s for sure – all of it works.

If you like the track above, you owe it to your ears to experience the rest:

‘Trick of the Light’ video from fantastic new Alexander Wolfe album

Out now on iTunes, ‘From The Shallows’ is the new album from the extremely good hands and mind of songwriter Alexander Wolfe. The album is a real triumph, typified by the layered excellence of lead track ‘Trick of the Light’ above.

If you dig the track, then we can highly recommend the rest of the album. We’ve heard it (spotify) and it’s consistently great throughout – and not always typified by the folky nature of the track above. It will also jump out at fans of pop, indie, maybe even rock…give it a try.

‘Beautifully chaotic indie rock’ – Irvine’s self titled album

A three piece based in London but originally from South Africa, Irvine are a band who are proud of their homeland but have decided to chase their music dreams in London.

The creators of high velocity indie rock, the trio have apparently drawn huge crowds in their home country thanks to an epic live show, one which they’re hoping will also garner them a reputation in the capital. Their music is characterised by their energy, some lovely rock melodies and tracks which don’t always follow where you might expect. It’s this willingness to change direction, as well as their raw pace, that set them apart.

Much anticipated NuBorg album out now, + UK show

A Norwegian singer songwriter who is so far flying a bit under the radar, Nuborg deserves a lot more plautits than she’s getting, as evidenced by the title track to her new album, ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’:

Patient, considered and brilliantly constructed, this song perfectly sums up the album of which it is a part. Throughout last year, this single and eight others were released over the months, each building to the release of the full album in early 2015. And now the album is out on iTunes, the collection of the songs altogether makes the impact of each track all the more impressive.

It’s a nine song LP that really shows that we don’t have to be satisfied with the big labels’ output. All independently produced and released, this is truly great music that you won’t hear on the radio (though you should).

Even better, Nuborg (aka Gunhild Nyborg) comes to England this week for a first ever live show with her band. Get along to The Islington in London to see what all the fuss is about.

New single – ‘One Day’, NuBorg

Once again, NuBorg – the Norwegian singer-songwriter who’s been consistently releasing excellent singles over the course of 2014 – has returned with another cracker.

Quite similar in feel to her excellent (and still my favourite) ‘Sliding Off The Edge Of The World’, ‘One Day’ is a song dripping with atmosphere, somehow ominous in its sound but still genuinely beautiful. NuBorg’s vocal is unusual, tight as opposed to broad, but suits this kind of song really well. Another really enjoyable song – keep them coming!

New artist alert! Lizzie Jane releases new single ‘I Don’t Think So’

Brassy, crass, and all the better for it. That’s arguably the best way to describe this new single from Lizzie Jane – a treatise on the entertainment industry’s vision of how a woman should look to be successful. Jane herself revels in the fact that she doesn’t fit the mould, well aware that – in spite of her obvious, genuine talent – she is unlikely to make it ‘big’.

Instead, she will settle for enjoying her music, very well captured and firing barbs at the deserving heads of entertainment.

You can hear the single here (beware some slightly risque lyrics…) and catch the show live at Jane’s single launch show, at Sound Control in Manchester this Friday (http://www.soundcontrolmanchester.co.uk/events/lizzie-jane/)
