Wicket’s new album ‘A Way To Leave Their World Behind’

A Welsh band who certainly know how to create a beautiful sound all of their own, Wicket are turning heads at BBC Radio Wales with their instrumental take on ambient post-rock. Their new album, ‘A Way To Leave Their World Behind’, is a journey through the possibilities that are opened up when not relying on lyrics for structure, sometimes heavy, sometimes light – always good.

Comprising 7 epic, sprawling tracks, the album is available for stream and download from BandCamp, and we highly recommend you give it a listen – if you like what you hear, you can find them on the road in the UK in May. Visit http://projectwicket.co.uk/ for all the details. If you’re a promoter, the band are also still looking to add to this tour, so get in touch at the website.

Mollie Marriott – ‘Transformer’ single out now

Already available on iTunes, ‘Transformer’ is a new single from a new artist whose name may be familiar to those of us at a certain age. Mollie Mariott is daughter of old school Small Faces vocalist Steve, the judging by this release, that vocal talent certainly hasn’t skipped a generation.

It’s taken some time for Mollie Marriott to strike out on her own path in the music industry, having spent a lot of time working as a backing vocalist. But as her talent was noticed by those she worked with (including the likes of Noel and Liam Gallagher, Paul Weller and more) it became clear that she was transcending her role in the background.

‘Transformer’ is a debut single and precedes a debut album to come later in the year. On this form it’s one to look forward to.

The Angeles Project, ‘Paper Heart’

From the stunningly spacey intro to the languid verse and quietly catchy (but not in a cheesy way) chorus, this new track from US based The Angeles Project is infectious in the best possible way. A simple, repetitive melody over some lovely musical touches, it serves as something of a twisted love letter to the band’s home town of Los Angeles. You can find The Angeles Project on iTunes. Classy and understated stuff.

Spirals set for self-titled debut mixtape this winter

Starting out on a brand new musical journey after some enforced time out of the industry due to illness, Spirals is the working title of excellent songwriter John Aziz.

His new mix tape (or mini-album) is a real statement of intent – self-written, recorded, produced and mastered. Written with the ambition of creating an epic, brilliant psych-rock album like classic Pink Floyd or Kraftwerk, Spirals draws from and blends together elements of classic song writing and musicianship with modern production techniques.

You can get a taste of what the self-titled debut release has to offer here:

In spite of his retro musical preferences, Spirals is heading down a modern route for the release, making the music available via BitTorrent Bundles in similar fashion to Thom Yorke’s recent surprise solo album.

So focussed on the music that he abandoned a job writing about economics and business to begin playing again after his enforced break, this release is the first in what looks likely to be a versatile string of music from the songwriter.

Not one to rest on his laurels, he already planning and writing his next release, an acoustic folk mixtape. Ambitious and innovative, this is the work and mind of a true music lover.

New EP from Josh Healey – ‘Lost, Found & Lost Again’ – Oct 27th

Already getting radio play with the lead track ‘Sometimes’, the new EP from Josh Healey is released next Monday. A singer-songwriter with a gentler touch than many, the five tracks on the EP demonstrate an artist who is assured in his songwriting and as such doesn’t feel the need to shout from the rooftops. In stark contrast, his music is uniformly understated and built on a very strong (and clearly thought out) approach to his lyrics.

Here is the opening track ‘Sometimes’ by way of example.

Perhaps the most commercial of all the songs on the EP (it’s no surprise that it’s this one that’s been chosen to take to radio) this serves as a very good introduction to the work of Healey, but for a fuller flavour the rest of the EP comes highly recommended too. Each of the sings has a distinct personality, whether strummed or plucked on the acoustic, while the vocal remains delicately poised throughout.

Jess Thristan records live version of ‘Little Bird’ for Ont’ Sofa

One of the UK’s hottest new singer/songwriters 19 year old Jess Thristan has recorded a breath taking live version of her upcoming new single ‘Little Bird’. The stripped back version of the wonderfully melodic and catchy tune is a masterly piece of music that fuses classic singer/songwriting with contemporary pop sensitivities.

The new single, which is released October 20th, is a follow up to April’s ‘Side By Side’ EP which gained major national radio play and reached number 8 in the iTunes singer/songwriter chart.

‘Little Bird’ shows a progression in the development of Jess as an extremely credible writer and performer. Also recorded at the Ont’ Sofa sessions was Jess’ interpretation of the classic Beatles track ‘From Me To You’. To view ‘From Me To You’ visit the link below.

With ‘Little Bird’ already achieving national radio play on BBC Radio 2 and with a live performance already booked on Clare Balding’s radio show, the single looks certain to further Jess Thristan’s reputation.

Shadowqueen – ‘Burning’ single out now

Coming in like a train and only letting up for strategically placed (and very cleverly orchestrated) breakdown sections, ‘Burning’ is heavy but melodic rock from Melbourne based rockers Shadowqueen.

They’ve been compared to the likes of AC DC, The Baby Animals and Queens Of The Stone Age, and from this full impact single it’s not hard to see why. Complete with darkly lilting harmonies for the verses and a full on chorus, this is a proper rock song.

This is their first single since a debut album in 2012, and hopefully there’s plenty more to come .
